Women's History Month 2024: Recap and Resources

Dear friends -

I chose the above image to remind you of not only a great quote by RBG, but also to vote next week!

Today marks the start of Women’s History Month – a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture, and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987.

Did you know that it started with a weeklong celebration in 1978 organized by a school district in Sonoma, CA? Did you know that Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History week in 1980? It was eventually expanded to the entire month of March.

International Women’s Day (IWD) falls on March 8 this year. IWD is a global celebration of the economic, political, and social achievements of women, and took place for the first time on March 8, 1911. Today, many countries around the world celebrate the holiday with demonstrations and educational events.

This year's theme is #InspireInclusion. Here's link to the IWD website for cool ideas on ways to support, recognize, and celebrate ALL women.

Women’s History Month Events

To support both Women’s History Month and IWD, I’ve engaged in several activities.

FIRST, on March 8, I’ll be giving a new presentation on “7 Superpowers of Women at Work” for the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA). They are offering 7 hours of programming and my session is 2-3 pm PT. Anyone can attend. Here’s link to LI post and 1-min video in case it’s of interest.

SECOND, on March 14, I’m giving a presentation on "EQ and You: Building Success Through Emotional Intelligence" for a child and family services agency. In millions of people who've taken EQ assessments worldwide, men and women are equally emotionally intelligent. However, we do have gender-specific EQ strengths that serve us well.

THIRD, speaking of EQ skills and gender differences, I just finished a proposal for a new book (or two)! The working title is "7 Superpowers of Men and Women: Leverage Your Innate Skills, Build Allyship, and Create Gender Inclusion". I'll be shopping for agents and publishers in March - a perfect way to honor Women's History Month.

New EQ Tools

I've recently created 3 new emotional intelligence resources that you might find helpful. These digital products are available for a one-time purchase and download via PDF. You can find them on my website as well via this link.

The FIRST resource is an "Emotional Intelligence Team Effectiveness Questionnaire". I've been studying, teaching, and writing about EQ for more than 20 years. There are different EQ models and assessments available for individuals, but very few resources for teams. Teams high in EQ are easy to spot...and unfortunately teams low in EQ are also easy to spot.

But how do you know where your team stands without everybody taking an EQ assessment? This questionnaire includes 30 questions with simple scoring to help you calculate your team's EQ effectiveness score. Give it a try!

The SECOND resource is "100 Strategies to Improve Your Emotional Intelligence". Over the years, I have accumulated much knowledge about EQ competencies and strategies. I also provide 1:1 coaching for clients using their EQ reports.

This document includes 100 practical strategies across every EQ competency that you can easily apply to improve YOUR skills. If you're looking for a comprehensive list of "how" to improve, this is it!

The THIRD resource is "Behavioral Interview Questions for Emotional Intelligence Hiring". Nearly all recruiters, talent acquisition specialists, hiring managers, and HR professionals ask interview questions about required skills needed for specific jobs. But very few ask questions about skills that are difficult to train on (such as self-awareness, social skills, stress tolerance, empathy, or motivation). These are crucial EQ skills needed for most jobs.

This document includes 116 behavioral interview questions that you can use to assess EQ in any potential candidate. Use these questions as a supplement to your required job skills questions.

Taylor Swift Out of the Woods Music Video Still One of my favorite Taylor Swift songs (yes, I'm a Swifty) is called "Out of the Woods". In the chorus, she repeats the phrases "Are we out of the woods yet?" and "Are we in the clear yet?" These days, I'm asking myself these same questions when in comes to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) topics. I provide DEI consulting to companies, teach a "Diversity & Inclusion at Work" course at UC Irvine business school, speak to dozens of companies on...
